Amsterdam's housing stock ranges from narrow canal-house apartments in the historic centre to postwar and newer developments further out. The centre, West, and Zuid tend to have older, smaller units with steep stairs and limited storage, while Noord (across the IJ) and Nieuw-West offer more recently built homes, often with better energy labels and more space for a comparable budget. Amsterdam Noord has grown quickly in recent years, connected to the centre by free ferries and, for parts of the district, the North-South metro line. Public transport within the city is extensive, with trams, buses, the metro, and a dense cycling network covering most neighbourhoods. Because demand across Amsterdam is high and competitive, having your documents ready and being able to view and respond quickly makes a real difference, whatever budget or area you are searching in.
