Living in Groningen

Groningen is one of the Netherlands' major university cities, and its housing market reflects a large student population alongside long-term residents. The compact city centre and station area put most amenities within cycling distance, which is typical of how the city is organised day to day. Helpman, south of the centre, is a quieter residential area with a mix of housing types, while Oosterpark and Paddepoel include more purpose-built student and family housing from the postwar period onward. Because such a large share of the population is made up of students, room and studio availability can shift noticeably around the start and end of the academic year, so timing your search around these periods, or being flexible about it, can affect how much choice you have.
