Apeldoorn stretches between the Veluwe woods on one side and open farmland on the other, giving the city a green, low-rise character unusual among Dutch cities of its size. The Oranjepark district beside the centre contains elegant older villas, while Paleis Het Loo and the surrounding parkland anchor the city's identity at its western edge. Residential growth has pushed south towards districts such as Zevenhuizen and the newer developments beyond them, and Berg en Bos park provides a large green lung in the southwest. Rail services connect Apeldoorn with Amsterdam, Utrecht, and the eastern corridor, and buses plus bikes cover daily movement within the city itself. Housing stock ranges from interwar brick housing near the centre to postwar districts and newer family neighbourhoods, so there is usually genuine variety available at any given time.
