Alphen aan den Rijn grew along the Oude Rijn in the Green Heart of the Netherlands, and much of its identity still follows the river and the surrounding meadowland. The historic core sits on both banks, while larger postwar districts such as Zegersloot, Kerk en Zanen, and Riddershof extend to the south and west with family-scale housing and local shopping centres. Its position between Leiden, Utrecht, and The Hague has made it increasingly popular with commuters priced out of the bigger cities, and new development has followed that demand. The city is flat and cycle-friendly, and the recreational lakes along the Rhine are close to several neighbourhoods. Comparing districts near the river against the quieter outskirts is worthwhile, since character and commute trade-offs differ noticeably within the city.
